STEM program

STEM is an approach to learning and development that integrates the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The foundational skills of STEM can be built from an early age, creating a solid foundation for future learning. By encouraging children to explore, investigate and play we are encouraging children to become active participants in their own learning.

In 2018, Monash Vale Early Learning Centre was awarded the National Australian Winner for the Little Scientist Early Stem Award. This was for our child-led inquiry project on water harvesting. This showcased our implementation of inquiry-based learning for 3 to 5 years old and demonstrated the children’s independent ideas, investigation, discoveries and methodical approach.

Little Scientist House

Monash Vale Early Learning Centre is recognised as a Little Scientist House. This identifies to our children, parents, peers and the wider community, our service’s commitment to hands-on, inquiry-based STEM education. It is designed to recognise services and schools that promote an active learning environment, incorporating best practice elements such as inquiry-based learning, metacognition and co-construction.

In 2019, our Pre-School room led in the development of our ‘STEM lab’ which is our multi-purpose space for children to explore STEM led experiences and inquiry. The space has been designed and developed with the children and continuing to grow.
